PROVIDER : SWSPCP WebinarCOURSE TITLE : Urban Wetlands, an opportunity to make sustainable cities
INSTRUCTORS
Dr. Carolina Rojas Quezada
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Abstract:
This webinar addresses the urbanization of wetlands in Latin America, particularly in Chile. Due to the lack of a definition and scarce recognition of wetlands in environmental laws, and consequently territorial planning instruments, the growth of cities have resulted in the destruction of many Chilean urban wetlands. This has occurred in spite of the 1981 Ramsar Convention and has enormous consequences to quality of life; and it also is cause for concern regarding effects upon resiliency to climate change through adaptation and mitigation. Recent changes in urban governance are beginning to address these concerns, as exemplified through the enactment of the unpublished Law for the Protection of Urban Wetlands. Dr. Quezada will present an illustration of how recreational spaces have integrated wetlands into the urban setting to take advantage of their beneficial structure and functions, such as rainwater capture and flood mitigation. This scenario will hopefully create more sustainable and resilient Chilean cities by 2030, as mandated by the United Nations, Sustainable Development Goal #11.
Bio:
• Postdoc, MC Master University, Canada, 2015;
• PhD in Cartography, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Universidad de Alcalá, Spain, 2008;
• Master, Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in Cartography, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, University of Alcalá, Spain, 2006;
• Geographer, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile, 2002; and
• Degree in Geography, Pontificia, Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile, 2001.
Dr. Quezada’s lines of research are urban sustainability and urban mobility, with special emphasis on the impacts and effects of urbanization on natural water ecosystems and accessibility to open and green spaces in sustainable ways. She has participated in national and international scientific events and has published more than 20 scientific articles of impact, along with links to public policies such as the Urban Wetlands Law. Currently her research is related to the conservation of urban wetlands in Chile and Latin America, accessibility indicators in Chilean cities, adaptation measures to climate change such as nature-based solutions, and the impacts of Covid-19 on the carbon footprint of homes.
