COURSE DESCRIPTION
Restoring Coastal Plain streams functional uplift through baseflow channel and valley restoration
Nasrin Dahlgren, PWS, CFM; pwdahl39@aacounty.org

ABSTRACT:
The Bureau of Watershed Protection and Restoration in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, has initiated the development of projects that were identified in the comprehensive watershed assessments of the County’s waterways. These projects are being implemented to provide ecological enhancement and support the requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit issued to the County and to assist in meeting pollutant load reductions associated with the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load.
This presentation is focused on the Cat Branch Stream project that included the enhancement of and creation of non-tidal wetlands and floodplain reconnection through the restoration of 1,500 linear feet of perennial stream channel. This presentation will discuss the programming, assessment, prioritization, and overall project goals. Additionally, it will outline site-specific restoration design considerations and the construction methods implemented to fully restore this valley; and ultimately provide for riparian habitat and ecological functional uplift of this degraded perennial stream system.
BIO:
Nasrin is a Senior Project Manager in the Bureau of Watershed Protection and Restoration within the Department of Public Works of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, where she manages large scale stream restoration projects in the Patuxent and Magothy River watersheds. Her focus within the program is to utilize a watershed-based approach to restoring degraded stream systems to improve the function, habitat, and water quality within local waterways throughout the County, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. Nasrin earned a B.S from Frostburg State University in Environmental Analysis and Planning, and Master of Geographic Information Systems from The Pennsylvania State University. Nasrin is a Professional Wetland Scientist and a Certified Floodplain Manager. Prior to her service in local government, Nasrin worked in private consulting where she managed and conducted environmental resource studies related to wetlands, waterways, forest and plant community structures; as well as comprehensive floodplain modeling and hydrologic studies.
